Train Advice 1622 DTMO Wanganui of 19-7-1963 deleted No.246 from cranes that could be run on goods trains
1962, Jun 20 CME to TS (54/37) Seeks advise on whether the crane be written off and scrapped as a letter has been received from Mr L.B. Street of Hamilton seeking to purchase the makers and instruction plates. Identifies the crane as a Cowans and Sheldon 10 ton hand crane (as referred to in paragraph 10 on p285 of the NI Working Timetable). Notes the crane had not yet been written off but had been standing on a back road at Wanganui for some time. The crane was taken over from the Wellington Manawatu Railway Co. on 2/1/1909 and was renumbered 246 from 253. Suggests a value of 15/- for the maker's plate and 1 for each of the instruction plates. Queries appropriate accounts for sale.1962, June 26 TS to DTM(Wang) Requests a report on the crane together with a recommendation regarding the scrapping of the machine. 1962, July 2 DTM(Wang) to TS (300/26/18) Responds that no records can be found in the DTM office concerning the crane which is mounted on a wagon and is standing in a siding in the Wanganui yard with other derelict wagons. Mechanical Branch has advised that it is still in working order. Traffic Branch indicates no likelihood of further use of the crane in this District.Hand written notes: "discussed with Mr Smith a DTM. Quite obviously no use for the Bch requirements 12/7/62" and "advise CME accordingly please 5/7/62". 1962, July 12 TS to CME responds that so far as this branch is concerned it is of no further use. As discussed with Mr Hoare, particulars of account numbers will be supplied by Chief Accountant. 1963, Mar 15 ACME to GM 26/138 Requests write off and scrapping of 246. Notes it was taken over with other Wellington-Manawatu Railway stock and was then valued at 110. Hand written notes: approved 20/3/63. 1963, Mar 29 GM to CME Write off and scrapping approved. 1959, Sep 23 CME to TS 26/138 Queries whether 8 ton hand travelling crane No.252 is required as proposes writing off and scrapping. DTM (Wgtn) has advised the DME that the crane, which has not been in use for some time, is not now required on his district. The crane is now 75 years old; it is mechanically sound but the outriggers, handles and locking plate for the balance block are missing. All metal work requires scraping and painting. Hand written note: Ask DM for recommendation 59/8. 1959, Sep 29 TS to DTM(Wgtn) Queries whether this crane is required in district. 1959, Oct 2 DTM(Wgtn) to TS 00/61 Advises that travelling crane No.252 is in a dilapidated condition and because of this it has not been used for a number of years. The machine is at present in the Napier Workshops. It is not now required in this district.Hand written note: Not required. Notes:
Believed last serviced Hillside June 1928 (marked D628). At some point acquired by Mason Bros. Foundry, Mt Wellington, Auckland, where it was used for moving casting boxes, (out of use by early 1970s). At some point the NZR running gear had been removed and the crane had been reduced to four wheel configuration (had pockets for springs but no horn guides) to run on 4 ft 8 1/2" track in workshop, and one axle was rigged with gearing for hand winding. Acquired by Bush Tramway Club in July 1973, restoration work carried out about 1980 when the running gear off a wagon was fitted and a headstock was replaced. Overhauled again in the late 1990s when most of the timberwork was replaced. Appeared in 2003 Film 'The Last Samurai'. Currently operational at Bush Tramway Club (Source: Colin Jenner, also see BTC website)
Note: there is some confusion regarding the crane no. Official Sources identify 293 as a pneumatic coaling crane. Colin sighted the number 293 painted on this crane after several layers of paint were removed. It seems unlikelt that this crane is 293, but further investigation is required.
