A Draft Crane and Excavator Bibliography

The following bibliography was created with the intention of identifying books on the subject of the history of cranes. As early excavators were often built on crane structures these were also included. Information on power shovels was also considered as these are also related.

The process used to create the data set was through making catalogue searchs using the terms: cranes, derricks, hoisting, lifting, excavator, excavating, earthmoving and materials handling. Known cranemakers names (Cowans Sheldon, Ransomes Rapier, etc) were also used as search terms. The catalogues used include COPAC, The British Library (for comparison), Library of Congress, and the National Library of New Zealand. The raw data set from these catalogue searchs was then edited into books, periodicals, conference proceedings, archival materials, and theses. The data sets were then reduced by removing juvenile books; books on mine hoisting and winding; most books on earthmoving and excavators which were clearly not crane or shovel related (i.e. bucket wheel excavators, scrapers, bulldozers, and trucks); and any other identifiably non-crane material.

The result is a rather rough list as some items were retained because they looked interesting and I'd like to check them out at some time. I have acquired some items in the list, but only a few others have been viewed in libraries. Therefore the bulk of the items in the list as presented have not yet been checked for relevancy. The list will continue to be processed (and hopefully) reduced.
