The boiler would require heavy repairs before it could be returned to service. Crane was purchased in 1931 to W.R.7651 at a total cost of 2,200.0.0 It was written off financially on 31 March 1956 Hand written note: approved GM 24/4/62. 1962, Apr 26 GM to CME Write off and scrapping of crane and boiler is approved. K.Bennett notes a Priestman Grab No.203 sighted Wanganui 1962 - no other references to a coaling grab 203 as yet sighted
Anecdotes - preparing for travel, working on as crane fitter, coaling at
Ranfurly, accident with chimney - see (Source:G.P.Graham NZRO 229
pp8-11).
Working timetables (NI 1947 and SI 1952) note that
Priestman Grab Coaling Cranes could be run on mixed and goods trains with
jibs trailing and a U or Ub with appropriate carrying gear to support the
jib to act as a running wagon. The cranes were to be prepared by securing
the outriggers with the appropriate clips (and wiring the clips) and
locking the slewing mechanism on the centre line with the tumbler lock
provided (in raised position and wired). Approval to travel was required
from the District Traffic Manager and the District Civil Engineer. The Car
and Wagon Inspoector arranged for lubrication.
Priestman Grab
Coaling Cranes were not to be run on the Rimutaka Incline (between Summit
and Cross Creek). Cranes No.206, No.207, and No.208 were not to be run on
trains or through shed doors. If required to be moved between stations the
Car and Wagon Inspector was required to certify that the cranes dimensions
were reduced to clear any obstructions and the crane was fit to run, and
the permission of the District Civil engineer was required prior to
dispatch. They were to be self-propelled with a brake-van attached or towed
by an engine at no more than 4mph (6.5kmh), and a guard and fitter (or
crane driver) had to accompany the crane. See here for general crane travelling
instructions.

The 1948 pneumatic crane census also shows an un-numbered Appleby hand-crane fitted with an air cylinder at Lyttleton. (source: 04/1849 of 26-5-1948 in Crosado Notes). Notes: Noted at Otahuhu shops Apr 1, 1948 ex-Te Kuiti (Source: 04/1849 of 1-4-1948 in Crosado Notes) Problem: A crane transferred to South Island as a replacement for 293 was found to be in as bad a state as 293 and only fitted to use 5cwt tubs as opposed to 10cwt tubs standard in S.I. Replacement was assembled from 'better' parts of 293 and unidentified replacement - minimum repairs to be safe for operation as only required for approximately a year - composite result to carry N.I. crane number. The crane number was incorrectly deciphered as 864 at Addington after minor repairs were made in January 1966. This was discovered when the crane was recommended for scrapping after the withdrawal of steam facilities at Picton. CME subsequently advised the DME Christchurch that the crane was 346. The Picton crane was approved for w/off by the GM on Aug 26, 1966 (see GM's 09/5231/2). An offer of 2.10.0 was subsequently received from Mr R.Freeth of Picton for the decking, verical post and pulleys - the cylinder & piston has been sent to Christchurch as spares. The offer was accepted on Nov 1, 1966 (Source: 04/1849 of 21-10-1965/ 29-11-1965/ 19-7-1966/ 31-8-1966/ 25-10-1966/ 1-11-1966 in Crosado Notes). However, the DME Wellington advised the CME in Nov 1966 that 346 was at Taihape (Source: 04/1849 of 30-11-1966 in Crosado Notes) Then DME Wellington noted crane as surplus at Taihape following dieselisation Nov 1966 (Source: 04/1849 of 30-11-1966 in Crosado Notes). This crane approved as w/off for scrapping by GM Mar 9, 1967 (Source: 04/1849 of 9-3-1967 in Crosado Notes) Crane forwarded to Hutt reclaim Apr 11, 1967 (Source: 04/1849 of 11-4-1967 in Crosado Notes) Answer? DME Auckland reported to CME in Jul 1965 that cranes in Dargaville and Otiria would shortly be surplus and one of these would be transferred south. Crane 364 was at Dargaville in 1962 (Source: Kerry Bennett) and this number seems more likely to have been interpreted as 864. The 364 reported by the CME may have been a transposition. 364 does not seem to appear in any later correspondence. Further query - was there some confusion caused by both 346 and 364 having previously been at Te Kuiti? Comparison of the respective capacities of 346 and 364 might shed further light on this conundrum (although as the balance block was increased in size from 1911 this would suggest the 1928 vintage 364 was larger capacity than the 1910 vintage 346). |
